Abstract

The Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) affected 68 million students from preprimary through university level. When normally teaching a learning creative writing course in a classroom, the situation necessitates a change; this should be changed in an online class. Students of the English Education Department at State Islamic University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung in the 4th semester of the 2019 academic year learned creative writing courses using Edmodo, caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. These may be distressing for both educators and learners. In response to this issue, the researcher explored students’ experiences and found out students’ responses during a learning creative writing course using Edmodo. The purposes of this study are to explore students’ experiences and find out students’ responses to learning creative writing using Edmodo during the COVID-19 pandemic in an EFL online classroom at the State Islamic University of Bandung. This qualitative case study was conducted at the State Islamic Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung English Education Department in the 2019 academic year. There were 9 representative students, and the samples consisted of three students from classes A-C with low, mid, and high achiever criteria who are taking creative writing courses on Edmodo. Stratified sampling is used for this study to find out the sample. There are some research findings: regarding students’ experiences: 1) Students have conducted the online course for 2 semesters since 2019. Then, the data showed Edmodo is an application that is easy to use and simple for students to join in creative writing classes, which can provide a strong virtual application for teaching and learning. Students and lecturers can give ideas, feedback, or correct their work by writing in the comments column. 2) There are three aspects regarding students’ responses (cognitive, affective, and conative) that from cognitive responses, students can easily understand the material and tasks given by the lecturers. They can also learn from each other to improve their writing skills using Edmodo. Affective responses showed students’ learning with fun and joy because Edmodo is easy to use, but students were sad because they have the main problem; internet connection. The conative response showed all students participated in the creative writing course. However, creative writing online using Edmodo can be conducted anywhere and anytime. Finally, all students from all criteria participate in creative writing using Edmodo. Edmodo is a suitable application for an online creative writing course. For future studies, the researcher recommends finding out about students’ learning processes, students motivation, and teachers’ experiences using Edmodo as a learning medium.
