Abstract

Characters arethe real life of literature. They have names, experiences, relationships like humans in real life. Characters also interact with other characters through dialogue. Not only that, the characters also respond to their feelings such as likes, dislikes, sadness, anger, and anxiety, through dialogue or actions like humans in real life. Anxiety is a condition or a person's response to an unpleasant situation and has the potential to become a danger.With the aim of anxiety in the psychology of humans in real life, humans need to see it in real terms, but also need to observe it in literary works. Fictional characters also display several characterizations and attitudes related to psychic and psychological experiences as in real life. The researcher stated two problems related to anxiety in fictional characters. 1) What are the types of anxiety experienced by Winston in George Orwell's 1984? 2) How does the anxiety affect Winston's behavior in George Orwell's 1984? This research uses character theory by Andrew Bennet and Nicholas Royle, psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud, anxiety by Richard P. Halgin and Susan Krauss Whitbourne, and theory of planned behavior by Icek Ajzen. The researcher uses the literary criticism method of Abrams (1999), to analyze the data one by one. The result of this study is that Winston experienced all types of anxiety and the types of anxiety he experienced had a positive effects on Winston’s behavior. Because, Winston’s behavior became more careful, controlled, and planned.
