Abstract

Based on the teaching experience at Baabussalam Islamic Boarding School, Bandung, West Java since 2020 and the limited observation at Grade Eight, it was found that there were several problems in speaking English faced by the students. Their difficulties are caused by 2 factors, external and internal. For the external factors are that the students did not have sufficient sources of learning. They learned only from the teacher’s lecture. In the other sides, as boarding students, they have little time to learn, especially in learning English. In internal factor is the students having a bad attitude towards English lessons. In their brains learning English is difficult, so their interest when study becomes less. Therefore, the purposes of this research are to find out the process and the students’ responses to the implementation of CLL method in teaching speaking. The method used in this research was a qualitative method with a descriptive study. The participant of this research was eight grade students of Baabussalam Islamic Boarding School, Bandung. The instrument of this research were observation and interview to the students. The data is analyzed by describing the result of the process of CLL method in teaching speaking in observation, and students’ responses toward the method in teaching speaking in interview. The findings of implementing CLL method in teaching speaking showed that when they given the CLL method in the learning process, they give prositive responses. All students feel that learning speaking English using the CLL method can make them easier to understand the material. In addition, with the implementation of the CLL method, 99% of students answered that learning was fun and enjoyable because they could discuss, exchange ideas, and help each other. While, 1% of students answered that they felt normal when learning with the CLL method. For the conclusion, the research shows that the process of CLL method in teaching speaking could enhance students’ speaking skills. This method can give students the opportunity to practice speaking English a lot. The data collection strategy in this study is limited to observations and interviews. Therefore, it would be better to next research conduct other instruments to complete the data.
