Abstract

The purposes of this research are 1) To know the students' vocabulary in using adjectives and adverbs in the English Diary, 2) To know the students' perception of the use of adjectives and adverbs in English diary to promote vocabulary acquisition. This study used a qualitative research design, specifically a case study. The participants were the nine students of 6th-grade students of Tarbiyatul Mu'allimin Islamiyah Darussalam Islamic Boarding School. The teacher chooses the student from the score of their English Diary into three categories. There are three categories; high, average, and low achievers. Document analysis and interviews were used as the instruments. The document analysis aimed to analyze the students' vocabulary use adjectives and adverbs in the English Diary. Then, the interview was conducted to know the students he students, perceptions on the use of adjectives and adverbs of English diary to promote vocabulary acquisition. The finding in this research showed first, the students used vocabulary adjectives and adverbs in the English Diary. The students can use the appropriate vocabulary adjective and adverb in their writing of the English Diary. Some students still lack in the use of vocabulary adjectives rather than an adverb. Second, the student's perception of the use of adjectives and adverbs in writing an English diary to promote vocabulary acquisition showed that all of the students agree that writing an English diary can be used for learning English, especially in learning vocabulary because the students feel happy, enthusiastic and they enjoy writing the English diary. The students also get the benefits from writing an English diary; such as the students can make a good sentence, make a good story and their vocabulary are increases. The conclusions were first the students can use the appropriate vocabulary adjective and adverb in the English diary. And the second is writing an English diary can give benefits for the students especially in promoting them to vocabulary acquisition. It is recommended that English teachers use English Diary as a weekly project to improve students' vocabulary mastery.
