Abstract

This research was aimed to analyze how good the students‟ vocabulary knowledge in writing a recount text is and to recognize how the teacher effectively teaches vocabulary during recount text learning. The importance of this research was to maximize vocabulary learning in writing the recount text based on the results of the assessment of students' vocabulary aspects related to the effectiveness of the vocabulary learning strategies and techniques that the teacher used. This research was designed as a qualitative method with a case study approach. It involved 6 eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Pangalengan Bandung who were selected based on their vocabulary scores as research participants. Taken from one class suggested by an English teacher. To obtain the data, the researcher used data collection techniques of documentation, observation, and interview. Interview with open-ended questions were conducted to obtain more detailed information regarding the effectiveness of the vocabulary teaching strategies used by the teacher in the current pandemic emergency situation. The results of this study show several points completed from analysis of documents, observations and interviews. First, 66% of the 8th grade students' vocabulary got good grades and the rest got poor grades. On average, students' vocabulary had the fewest errors in the meaning aspect, then the form and the largest errors were found in the usage aspect. Second, the teacher has used several vocabulary learning strategies adapted to the pandemic conditions, however she missed the memorization strategy. In addition to this, the teacher did not optimize vocabulary teaching techniques in the use aspect by providing much practice for the students. In conclusion, the findings show that English teacher need to consider the magnitude of vocabulary errors that students make in terms of usage. It is necessary to increase vocabulary learning, especially in the use aspect by providing more exercises and ensure the students to involve with practicing the vocabulary that they have learned.
