Abstract

Appraisal is one of the meaning systems can be applied on analyzing reader’s response in this case twitter. The selected samples of this research object is the twitter comment column on the New York Times’ article reporting ISIS’ leader death. There are two major objectives of research based on the background and research questions above as follow: identification of attitude’s elements of appraisal system based on its context of situation on the column and investigation of the attitude’s polarities based on its context of situation on the column. Appraisal is a system for negotiating social relationship and let people or things involved to express feelings and values. There are three elements of attitude analyzed: affect, judgement, and appreciation. In this research, the design of analysis used is qualitative method. This research takes the appraisal theory of Martin J.R supported by White and Rose (2005; 2007). Sampling approach of this research is purposive sampling method. The samples of this research are 62 comments collected from 135 comments totally consisting of appraisal element. Documentation is applied as the technique of collecting data on this research. This research applies the technique model developed by Miles and Huberman (1992) which is divided into three processes: data reduction, data display, and data conclusion. The result shows several findings including the accumulation of attitude’s types and dominant choice of appraised items. There are totally 105 attitude’s elements raised, in which 23 items as affect, 72 items as judgement, and 10 items as appreciation. Meanwhile, 67.6% responses of them are given as negatively, and 32.4% remains as positively. The most evaluations are given to New York Times as news’ reporter, followed by Al-Baghdadi as the actor reported, and Trump as US president who have also involved on the news. In general, the evaluation on the column consists of happiness with the news, dissatisfaction to news’ diction, positive judgement to Trump’s capacity, questioning to Al-Baghdadi’s normality, and judging to ISIS leader’s immorality.
