Abstract

This study is intended to investigate how a teacher reflects on their strategies of EYL online teaching, and their experience. This study is essential to know the strategies they use as well as the conveniences and barriers they experience. This study is conducted to portrait the language education that happens to young learners during COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. This study uses qualitative method, especially narrative inquiry design that involves a practitioner who was experienced in teaching English for young learners during COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, the selected participant is a teacher who must be teaching English for young learners, the participant is also selected from her place of teaching and her experience in teaching English to young learners, because the facility factor will also be very influential. In the data collection process, the researcher conducts online interviews with the intended participant and also asks for photos of activities carried out by the participants with their students. This study shows a result that there are several points; those are strategies, convenience, and barriers, in teaching English for young learners during COVID-19 pandemic. First, strategy that teacher used. Strategy that a teacher uses to teach English for young learners during COVID-19 pandemic is collaborative learning with blended method between online and offline learning which is a teacher share the material online via WhatsApp group and the furher explanation about the material is done offline at one of student’s house. Second, convenience teacher receives, that is more time-efficient when checking students’ assignments. Before the pandemic, a teacher checks the students assignments manually, but because this pandemic a teacher forced to uses Googleform, which is the score is automatically out when students fill the form. Third, barriers teachers find is several complaints from the students and students’ parents about online learning system. Most complaint from students’ parents is about that they do not have money to buy internet quota, or even smartphone itself. In conclusion, the finding shows that there are many things should be evaluated in term of teaching English to young learners during pandemic COVID-19. Nevertheless, teaching English to young learners always has a chance of being better than before. After do this research and find some barriers, teachers expected to do learning stargey or learning media which can access to all students.
