Abstract

Expressive speech acts is one type of speech acts used by speakers to express their feelings and attitudes towards something such as greeting, thanking, praising, hoping, and apologizing. The research questions are 1. What types of expressive speech acts are used in the comments on the video entitled Coronavirus Update from Around the World - BBC News? 2. What is the purpose of the expressive speech acts that appear in the comments on the video? The theory used is Searle's expressive speech acts theory and other speech acts theories as supporters. The data taken is in the form of comments on a youtube video entitled Coronavirus Update from Around the World - BBC News from the BBC News channel. The method used in this research is qualitative method. The techniques of analyzing the data are data reduction, data presentation and data conclusion. The results of this research found 49 data including 3 data included in the expressive speech acts of greeting, 4 data included in the expressive speech acts of thanking, 6 data included in the expressive speech acts of praising, 9 data included in the expressive speech acts of wish, 1 datum included in the expressive speech acts of apologizing, 13 data included in the expressive speech acts of criticizing and 13 data included in the expressive speech acts of arguing. Then the purpose of each type of expressive speech acts, expressive speech acts of greeting: to greet people and start a conversation. Expressive speech acts of thanking: to express gratitude and as a form of gratitude to God. Expressive speech acts of praising: praising others, as an expression of pride, and admiration. Expressive speech acts of wish: as a form of wish and prayer. Expressive speech acts of apologizing is to apologize for a mistake. Expressive speech acts of criticizing: criticizing, denying, and discussing differences of opinion. Expressive speech acts of arguing: arguing, opposing and rejecting. After completing this research, the researcher has several suggestions that can be useful for further research. For researchers who research similar discussions, they can use other theories and references and with different objects.
