Abstract

This research was motivated by the obstacles facing by students in Islamic Senior High School Al-Ashdariyah Garut in the process of learning writing. They had difficulties in expressing their ideas in writing recount and could not organize the ideas and fit into specific genre. The research focused on exploring the process of using Dialogue Journal Writing (DJW) and findings its improvement on EFL students’ writing ability. The research used a qualitative approach with a case study research design. The research participants were 9 students from class A Science. To obtain the data, the researcher used observation and student’ writing analysis. The data from observation was intended to discover the process of using DJW on EFL learning recount text. Then, the data from students’ writing were collected to be analyzed what writing aspect that improved by uses DJW. The research was conducted on online learning which used WhatsApp group class. The findings of the research showed that in exploring the process of using DJW on learning recount text was implemented in three stages; modeling session, assigning dialogue journal task 1, assigning dialogue journal task 2. Based on the students’ writing test, the writing aspect that improved after used DJW was in the content and organization aspect. Writing aspects of vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics were not improved. The students’ recount writing was assessed by the rubrics from Brown (2007). The researcher concluded that using DJW to EFL students writing recount text improves on content and organization aspect. The researcher recommends this writing technique in teaching writing recount text or other genre text.
