Abstract

Human has been created by God with each own personality. The personality which people have is influenced by their characteristic, behavior, action, attitude, and mind stream. The psychopathic disorder is one of the human personalities that is always considered dangerous and detrimental for the public since a long time ago. This personality does not only appear in the reality, but also exists in the world of literature, especially a novel. In this research, the researcher is interested in a novel entitled Illusion of Luck by Robert Burton Robinson. The researcher submits two research questions to discuss and to limit the problem. First, how does the psychopathic disorder appear in the main character in Illusion of Luck? Second, how does Larry Luzor deal with his internal conflict to fulfill his desire? The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method by Hancock, Ockleford, and Windridge to analyze the text. This descriptive method can describe systematically the whole research about psychopathic disorder in the main character in Illusion of Luck novel. This research uses the psychopath theory by Hervey Cleckley and sharpened by the psychopath theory by Robert Hare and Stefan Verstappen. For analyzing the psychopathic disorder of the main character’s personality, the researcher uses the psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud as the grand theory. The result of the analysis shows that; 1.) Larry as the main character has some psychopath characteristics which can be seen from his behavior such as liar, lack of remorse and shame, and egocentric. Then, it can be seen from his action such as murder, assault, and rape. 2.) The internal conflict of Larry appears from his domination of id. So, he mostly uses razionalitation as a defense mechanism to deal with his internal conflict. This defense mechanism is used to reduce the anxious when he fails to gratify the id’s demand. By applying psychoanalysis theory on this research, the researcher obtained significant way to understand the story.
