Abstract

Based on the experience in the teaching practice program (October-December 2019) at ninth-grade in SMP Al-Hasan Panyileukan Bandung, it was found that there were several problems in reading comprehension faced by the students. They were difficult to read a written text because of a lack of vocabulary mastery, grammatical knowledge, and background knowledge. To solve the problems, this research would plan to use an online small group discussion method. Therefore, the purposes of this research are to find out the process and the students’ responses to the implementation of an online small group discussion method to enhance students’ reading comprehension. The method used in this research was a qualitative method with a descriptive study. The participant of this research was nine students of the ninthgrade in SMP Al-Hasan Panyileukan Bandung. Stratified sampling was used as a sampling technique. The instruments of this research were document analysis, interview, and questionnaire. The data is analyzed by describing the result of the process of online small group discussion method to enhance reading comprehension in document analysis and interview, and students’ responses toward the method to enhance their reading comprehension in a questionnaire. The findings of implementing online small group discussion method to enhance students’ reading comprehension showed that: (1) The process of online small group discussion method has been implemented well which use the steps of online SGD method guides; orientation, norm establishment, productive, and termination stage from Robertson in Sulistyawati (2012) in the teaching-learning reading comprehension. (2) Students’ responses toward the implementation of an online small group discussion method were dominated by positive responses which students said toward the activities of the method could enhance their reading comprehension. In conclusion, this research shows that the process of the online small group discussion method could enhance students’ reading comprehension. This research is recommended for English teachers to explain the instruction in each step of the method and review reading materials, and for future researchers, they should analyze the ability of students’ reading comprehension based on several reading tasks to make sure that students have a reading comprehension ability.
