Abstract

Language variation is a science that is studied in sociolinguistic studies. Registers is one of language variation used based on its use such as context, field, occupation, or certain social groups. In this research, the researcher will examine the coronavirus register related to education. The purposes of this research are to identify the kind of register and the function of register of education discourse in scientific journals about coronavirus. This research analyzed using Michael Halliday’s theory as the basis of analysis. The object used in this research are scientific journals about coronavirus related to education. This research employed a qualitative research method. The steps of analyzing data are determining the criteria of each category, matching each data which fit to the kinds of registers, and describing the functions of registers that used in scientific journals about coronavirus related to education. The results show that there are 23 registers in this research which are included in two kinds of registers and two functions of registers. Two kinds of registers in this research are closed registers and open registers. The kind of closed register revealed 17 registers, the kind of open register found 6 registers. In this research, there are two functions of registers including regulatory function consisting of 13 registers and representation function consisting of 10 registers. Based on the results of the research, providing a fact that the use of closed registers is more widely used in formal language such as in scientific journals about coronavirus and the use of regulatory functions more in these journals shows that the information contained does not only include an understanding but also contains a lot of information refers to a social rule or command.
