Abstract

ENGLISH: Understanding meaning is an important thing in reading process. The information will be conveyed clearly if the readers can understand the meaning of the information. In semantics study, understanding the conceptual meaning is not enough, the readers must also understand the connotative meaning. This research focuses on analyzing coronavirus impact expressions in Tempo English magazine using connotative meaning by Leech (1981) as a grand theory and Hook in Widarso (1989) as a supporting theory. The aims of this research are to find out and to analyze the negative and positive connotative meanings in coronavirus impact expressions found in Tempo English magazine. This research is designed for a qualitative research. This method helps the researcher to describe the data being studied qualitatively. In analyzing qualitative data, there are various kinds of methods, including qualitative content analysis. The use of a qualitative content analysis in this research is to know, to describe, and to analyze the connotative meaning applied in Tempo English magazine, April 14, 2020 edition. The researcher found 27 connotative meanings of coronavirus impact expressions, in which 15 are positive connotations and 12 are negative connotations. Thus, the coronavirus impact expressions are dominated by the negative connotative meaning. The result of this research indicates that the negative connotative meaning of coronavirus impact expressions are associated with a threat to various sectors such as the employment, transportation, economic and social sectors. On the other hand, the positive connotative meaning of coronavirus impact expressions are associated with a win-win solution. In a nutshell, the connotative meaning of coronavirus impact expressions in Tempo English magazine April 14, 2020 edition can have a bad impact as well as can have a good impact on the readers. INDONESIA: Memahami makna merupakan hal yang penting dalam proses membaca. Informasi akan tersampaikan dengan jelas jika pembaca dapat memahami makna dari informasi tersebut. Dalam kajian semantik, memahami makna konseptual saja tidak cukup, pembaca juga harus memahami makna konotatif. Penelitian ini berfokus pada analisis makna konotatif pada ungkapan dampak virus corona di majalah Tempo English dengan menggunakan teori Leech (1981) sebagai teori utama dan teori Hook dalam Widarso (1989) sebagai teori pendukung. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui dan menganalisis makna konotatif negatif dan positif pada ungkapan dampak virus corona di majalah Tempo English. Penelitian ini dirancang untuk penelitian kualitatif. Metode ini membantu peneliti untuk mendeskripsikan data yang diteliti secara kualitatif. Dalam menganalisis data kualitatif, ada berbagai macam metode, termasuk analisis isi. Penggunaan analisis isi dalam penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui, mendeskripsikan, dan menganalisis makna konotatif yang diterapkan dalam majalah Tempo English edisi 14 April 2020. Peneliti menemukan 27 makna konotatif pada ungkapan dampak virus corona, dimana 15 data berkonotasi positif dan 12 data berkonotasi negatif. Dengan demikian, ungkapan dampak virus corona didominasi oleh makna konotatif negatif. Hasil dari penelitian penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa makna konotatif negatif dari ungkapan dampak virus corona dikaitkan dengan ancaman terhadap berbagai sektor seperti sektor ketenagakerjaan, transportasi, ekonomi, dan sosial. Di sisi lain, makna konotatif positif pada ungkapan dampak virus corona dikaitkan dengan solusi yang saling menguntungkan. Secara singkat, makna konotatif dari ungkapan dampak virus corona dalam majalah Tempo English edisi 14 April 2020 dapat berdampak buruk juga sekaligus dapat berdampak baik bagi pembaca.
