Abstract

ENGLISH : Monopthongization is the process of sound change from double vowels into single vowels that are pronounced by Sundanese of English Literature Students of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University Bandung. There are two purposes of this research as follows; the first is figuring out monophthongization through English speech pronounced by Sundanese of English Literature Students of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University Bandung on YouTube; the second is finding out how monophtongization produced phonologically by investigating the phonetic symbols pronounced by Sundanese of English Literature Students of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University Bandung on YouTube. This research is viewed as a descriptive qualitative method because it analyzes the data descriptively based on the theory of phonology. As well as applied two main theories: Campbell’s theory and Roach’s theory theories for discussing monophthongization and phonological system. Based on the findings of this research, the researcher concludes as follows: a) there are seven diphthongs are predicted as students’ problem in pronouncing English. The diphthongs are [əʊ], [eɪ], [aɪ], [aʊ], [eə], [ɪə], and [ʊə], b) the changing sounds happened from [əʊ] to [ə], [eɪ] to [e], [aɪ] to [a] also [ɪ], [aʊ] to [ʊ], [eə] to [e], [ɪə] to [ɪ], and [ʊə] to [ʊ]. It happened due to the phonological system Sundanese language is different from the English language. Sundanese does not provide diphthong in their mother tongue, whereas the English language provides that kind of phonological system. INDONESIA : Monoftongisasi adalah proses perubahan bunyi dari vokal ganda menjadi vokal tunggal yang diucapkan orang Sunda sebagai mahasiswa Sastra Inggris di Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Ada dua tujuan dari penelitian ini sebagai berikut; yang pertama adalah mencari tahu monoftongisasi melalui pidato bahasa Inggris yang diucapkan oleh Mahasiswa Sastra Inggris dari Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung di YouTube; yang kedua adalah mencari tahu bagaimana monoftongisasi diproduksi secara fonologis dengan menyelidiki simbol-simbol fonetik yang diucapkan oleh Mahasiswa Sastra Inggris Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung di YouTube. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif karena menganalisis data secara deskriptif berdasarkan teori fonologi. Serta menerapkan dua teori utama: teori Campbell dan teori Roach untuk membahas monoftongisasi dan sistem fonologis. Berdasarkan temuan penelitian ini, peneliti menyimpulkan sebagai berikut: a) ada tujuh diftong yang diprediksi menjadi masalah siswa dalam melafalkan bahasa Inggris. Diftong tersebut adalah [əʊ], [eɪ], [aɪ], [aʊ], [eə], [ɪə], dan [ʊə], b) terjadi perubahan bunyi dari [əʊ] menjadi [ə], [eɪ] ke [e], [aɪ] ke [a] juga [ɪ], [aʊ] ke [ʊ], [eə] ke [e], [ɪə] ke [ɪ], dan [ʊə] ke [ʊ]. Hal itu terjadi karena sistem fonologi bahasa Sunda berbeda dengan bahasa Inggris. Bahasa Sunda tidak memberikan diftong dalam bahasa ibu mereka, sedangkan bahasa Inggris menyediakan sistem fonologi semacam itu.
