Abstract

Translating can be helpful for people looking for information from various sources from different countries. In the process of translation, various problems will be found for the translators. Therefore, translation methods and strategies are needed to solve these problems. This study aims to analyze the translation method by Newmark (1988) and translation strategy by Baker (1992) contained in sentences that have directive speech act functions used by YouTube account owners; Urban Favor and Chandra Hasyim. On both of them, researchers found 46 selected data of directive speech act. The collected data was analyzed descriptively using a qualitative research design. The findings of the translation analysis with translation methods and strategies are mostly Literal Translation method and Translation by Superordinate/More General Word strategy. Urban Favor used 4 methods (5 datum of Literal Translation, 1 datum of Idiomatic Translation, 1 datum of Communicative Translation, and 3 datum of Free Translation) and Chandra Hasyim used 4 methods (23 datum of Literal Translation, 5 datum of Communicative Translation, 7 datum of Free Translation, and 1 datum of Word for Word Translation). Urban Favor used 3 strategies (6 datum of Translation by Superordinate/More General Word , 2 datum of Translation by Omission, and 2 datum of Translation by Paraphrase Using a Related Word). Chandra Hasyim used 4 strategies (28 datum of Translation by Superordinate/More General Word, 4 datum of Translation by Omission, 3 datum of Translation by Paraphrase Using a Related Word, and 1 datum of Translation by Paraphrase Using a Unrelated Word). The directive speech act sentences that are also identified in this study tend to have an advising function. Because of the dominant literal translation method and translation by superordinate/more general word strategy used, it can be concluded that the motivational words described by Jack Ma are fairly communicative and easy to understand what is said. This is due to the fact that they do not use many specialized terms during the translation process.
