Abstract

Phrasal verb is one of the elements that are often used to communicate in English. It can be found either in informal or formal way of communication. However, this element was not discussed much in learning English academically. The difficulties about understanding phrasal verbs due to the meanings of a phrasal verb are broader than just the meaning of the verb and its particles. Some phrasal verbs have different meaning depend on the context. Phrasal verbs are not found in the common dictionary as well. Therefore the writer is interested in exploring more about this topic. This research aims to discover phrasal verbs in film The Edge of Seventeen and identified phrasal verb in form of the type, particle constituents and the meaning. This research uses Rudzka-Ostyn (2008) and McArthur (1992) as the main theories to analyze the data. The data in the study are 96 phrasal verbs. This research uses a qualitative descriptive analysis method. Based on the data analysis, the writer finds 25 Separable Phrasal Verbs and 71 Inseparable Phrasal Verbs. Other types of phrasal verbs found are 61 Transitive Phrasal Verbs and 35 Intransitive Phrasal Verbs. In these data, the particle constituents that construct the phrasal verbs are Prepositions (9 phrasal verbs), Adverbial Particle (79 phrasal verb), and Phrasal-prepositional (8 phrasal verbs). The meanings resulted from these phrasal verbs are literal meaning, found in 75 phrasal verbs, and metaphorical meanings, found in 21 phrasal verbs.
