Abstract

This undergraduate thesis discussed slavery in Bilal: A New Breed of Hero film and 12 Years A Slave film. From the title of this undergraduate thesis, it would be known that the objects for this research were Bilal: A New Breed of Hero film and 12 Years A Slave film. Slavery is a social and economic relationship between slave owner, or also called as master, and slave. Although, actually no one wanted to be born as a slave. The researcher formulated three research questions in this research. The first was about the portrayal of slavery in Bilal: A New Breed of Hero and 12 Years A Slave film. The second was the relationship of, economic, religion, and culture with slavery in Bilal: A New Breed of Hero and 12 Years A Slave. The third was about the struggles of slave to obtain freedom. To analyze both objects, the researcher uses theory of slavery from Kevin Bales. The researcher also uses Marxism by Karl Marx as a literary theory to assist this research since it is related to examine two antagonistic classes, which in this case, between slave and slave owner. It is also used to discuss economic, religion, and culture. Besides, the researcher is going to compare both objects by using comparative literature. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis method and comparative literature method. The results of this research are, both films contained portrayal of slavery, which is the manifestation of the oppression that done by master to slave. It covers extreme imbalance power, exploitation, violence threat, and losing of free will that experienced by slaves. Unlike in Bilal: A New Breed of Hero film which mostly showed slavery portrayal of the lose of free will side, 12 Years A Slave film shows more in exploitation side. The researcher also found that there is relationship of economy, religion, and culture with slavery in both films. Particularly, the relationship of religion and culture with slavery in both films are rooted from economic matters. Both films show that the masters use religion and culture for the sake of maintaining their economy. Finally, the researcher found that the slaves in both films managed to gain freedom after going through several struggles.
