Abstract

Popular literature is literature that can be enjoyed by many people with a large audience scale. As the name implies, popular literature is very popular and many discussed in society. Comics have become one of the literary works that are loved by many people, even from children to the elderly. Comics are an alternative part of analyzing literature. Science fiction is a popular genre that has been widely used in literature. The research has two statements of the problem, the question is: 1) how is the characterization of science fiction in the comic The Amazing Spiderman #521, #522, #523?; 2) how is the plot and setting presented in the comic The Amazing Spiderman #521, #522, #523 support science fiction formulas? This research focused on analyzing a characteristic of science fiction, plot, and setting that support in science fiction. The theories that have been chosen by the researcher that are compatible to solve the statements of problem. The researcher used Sarick’s theory to analyze the characteristics of science fiction in the comic The Amazing Spiderman, also Robert and Jacob’s theory to analyze plot and setting in the comic The Amazing Spiderman. The researcher used qualitative descriptive methods in this research to analyze and describe characteristics of science fiction, plot and setting in this research. In analyzing this research, the researcher used a process capturing some scenes of the data. Process of capturing gets several data that represent characteristics of science fiction, the plot and setting. The data source of this research is taken from marvel’s comic The Amazing Spiderman #521, #522, #523. The characteristic of science fiction describes some of the characteristics of science fiction that appear in the comic The Amazing Spiderman #521, #522, #523, and also how the plot rate and also the setting that explains the science fiction scene in comics.
