Abstract
Translation is a process of transferring a text from source language into target language. It is not an easy process or activity especially if the text is about the translation of Quran. It must be careful in translating because it will affect the meaning. Therefore, the translator should have strategies to solve some problems when they were translating in order to make the meaning of that translation sense. Thus, in this research the researcher discussed some shift strategies used by Pickthall and Dr. Mustafa Khattab in translating Maryam story of surah Maryam in the Quran and also discussed the meaning contextually bound in the English translation of Maryam story by Pickthall and Dr. Mustafa Khattab. As the theoretical basis for analyzing the problems, the researcher used the theory of the translation shift according to Catford to analyze about the kinds of translation shifts used in translating Maryam story and the theory of contextual meaning by Pateda to find out the meaning contextually bound in translation of Maryam story. The study employed qualitative descriptive method to achieve the purpose. The source of data of this research is the English translation of Maryam story in surah Maryam by Pickthall and Dr. Mustafa Khattab which are taken from the Noble Quran. As the result, the researcher found four kinds of translation shifts in Maryam story. Those are three data of level shift, six data of structure shift, four data of class shift, and three data of unit shift. Then, the researcher discovered six types of context in contextual meaning of Maryam story. Those are eight context of organ, four context of place, six context of purpose, six context of situation, four object context, and two context of time.
