Abstract

Learning vocabulary as a foreign language seems easy but some students feel fear. Realizing how important the vocabulary and how difficult students to build up the teachers of English have provided students with rich exciting exercise which are expected to help vocabulary mush be very helpful to improve the students’ ability in English communication. This research used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design which focused on using Pictionary Game to develop students’ noun vocabulary mastery The study was aimed to find (1) students’ achievement in English noun vocabulary mastery before applying Pictionary Game, (2) students’ achievement in English noun vocabulary mastery after applying Pictionary Game, (3) significant influence of the application of Pictionary Game on the students’ achievement in English noun vocabulary mastery. Furthermore, this research employed observation and tests in order to collect the data. This research was conducted at SD Plus Baiturrahman involving 38 respondents, using the purposive sampling, of the 6th grade. Based on the result of the research, students’ achievement in English noun vocabulary mastery before using Pictionary Game is not good. Based on the results, the highest score of pre-test in the experimental class before they were taught by using Pictionary Game was 70, and the lowest was 35. In addition, the mean of pre-test score was 52. Students’ achievement in English noun vocabulary mastery after using Pictionary Game. Based on the result, the highest score of post-test in the experimental class after they were taught by using Pictionary Game was 90 and the lowest was 60. In addition, the mean of post-test score was 77. There is a significant improvement between the students’ achievement in English noun vocabulary mastery before and after using Pictionary Game. Using Pictionary Game to improve students’ English noun vocabulary mastery was effective. It was seen from the t-test data showing that t count = 3.22 and t table = 2.64. It means that t count > t table. So, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. This research concluded that Pictionary Game can improve students’ achievement on English noun vocabulary mastery Therefore, it is important for teachers/lecturers to use Pictionary Game as the alternative or fun way to teach vocabulary.
