Abstract

A weak point has been identified in terms of accuracy in that students become very fluent, but their spoken language is also far from precise. Therefore, speaking accuracy means the ability to use the language according its systematic. In order to make students able to speak accurately, a teacher should know and apply a suitable method and activity to teach speaking. Collaborative language teaching refers to a learning condition in which students makes interaction in small group to do the academic task to reach the same goal. Moreover, pair and group work is a kind of collaborative language teaching. This research was intended to discover students’ speaking accuracy in pair and group performances. Specifically, this research was aimed to achieve the objectives: 1) to find out the students’ speaking accuracy in pair work, and (2) to find out the students’ speaking accuracy in group performance. This research used a qualitative research design, specifically in a case study. The participants were nine students of the 10th grade at Yasri Vocational High School Bandung in the academic year 2020/2021. The participants were selected purposively based on the students’ scores in English lesson. To obtain the data, observation was used. The observation data was aimed to discover the process of students’ performance in pair and group work. The finding of this research showed that discussion was implemented well in group performance. The result of the group discussion produced a good speaking accuracy by each group. Nevertheless, the discussion in pair performance did not went well and also produced an average speaking accuracy. To conclude, the group performances affected students’ speaking accuracy than pair performances.
