Abstract

There are two sub-disciplines in linguistics which deal with sound namely phonetics and phonology. How human produces sound exist in speech production material. In this research the writer focuses on consonant study. Consonant sounds are classified into three dimensions; place of articulation, manner of articulation and voicing. The theories are used for analyzing the sound production of Yaseer Arafat which means he as the active user of Arabic language. The sources are taken from Baker Institute YouTube channel. The result show data based on Roach’s theories and supported by McMahon’s theories about place of articulation, manner of articulation and voicing. Place of articulation consist of bilabial, labiodental, dental, alveolar, postalveolar, palatal, velar and glottal. Whereas in manner of articulations are fricative, flap, approximant, trill, plosive and nasal. Moreover, voicing only has two kinds, those are voiced and voiceless. The method that used by the writer is qualitative method by presenting the data in completing the research. Qualitative research is employed in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting the data. The reason of choosing this method is because it is a reflective process operating though every stage of a project. In conclusion, the place of articulation founded in Arafat speech are alveolar, bilabial, dental, labiodental, postalveolar, and velar. Only two kinds of place of articulation that cannot be founded in Arafat speech, those are palatal and glottal place. Whereas in manner of articulation founded fricative, flap, approximant, trill, plosive and nasal. It almost all of articulation manner discovered. Moreover, voicing only has two kinds, those are voiced and voiceless. It founded both.
