Abstract

This research has a purpose to analyze sign and meaning of onomatopoeias in Scooby Doo: Where are You Series Comic. In this case, major of aims which presented in this research are 1. To find out types of sign of onomatopoeias especially that exist in Scooby Doo: Where Are You Series Comic. 2. To find out meanings in each type of sign of onomatopoeias words especially that exists in Scooby Doo: Where Are You Series Comic. This research used semiotic and semantic analysis to investigate the research problem. To analyze sign of onomatopoeia the researcher used Pierce’s theory, and to analyze the meaning of sign the researcher used contextual meaning. Method of this research is qualitative descriptive. Through this method, researcher explain and describe the data were taken in this research. Data in this research were taken from comic, those data were describe by an explanation and provides in form of table and figure. This research presents data which analyzed by classification of sign and contextual meaning. The researcher took 40 data from 86 data that found. The researcher collected the data as a sample by purposive sampling. Furthermore, data were presented in data analysis is explain by table and picture. A table was used to explain the sign inside the data, and a picture was presented to explain the contextual meaning inside the data. The result of this research show onomatopoeia based on the ground can be sourced from legisign and sinsign. Based on the objects, sign of onomatopoeia included into icon because the source of the sign is image. Based on the interpretation, it can be as rheme or decisign. The second conclusion is from contextual meaning of onomatopoeia is sign of onomatopoeia has meaning that can be seen from the situation where the sign appeared and describing what it is.
