Abstract

This writing focuses on the study of Nabia Abbott’s theories on the growth of isnâd and the written transmission of Prophetic hadîth. This research is significant to do because there were misunderstandings from the students of Prophetic hadîth in the West, like Ignaz Goldziher who said that the growth of Prophetic hadîth in a big quantity in the second and the third century A.H. is caused by the fabrication of the text (matn) of Prophetic hadîth and that in early Islam, hadîth was transmitted orally only and there is no written document in the process of its transmission. Different from Ignaz Goldziher ideas, Nabia Abbott of the opinion that the phenomenal growth of hadîth in the second and the third century A.H. is not caused by the growth of the text (matn) of hadîth, but by the parallel and multiple growth of isnâd (chain of transmission). Beside that, Nabia Abbott said that the practice of writing hadîth was occurred since early Islam, namely that the members of family of Muhammad peace be up on him, his Companions and his clients wrote hadîth and preserved these writings, and continuously, namely that most of hadîth was transmitted orally and its transmission goes hand in hand with the transmission of written documents until the hadîth was compiled in the canonical hadîth collections.
