Abstract

Grammar plays an important role to foreign language teaching learning process. By leaning grammar, students can understand the message of either a written or an utterance without any misunderstanding. Besides, it can help them do English task. Students assumed that learning grammar is hard and bored. Furthermore, in teaching grammar, teachers need a strategy to make students easy and enjoyable in learning grammar. One of strategies is by using English Webtoon (digital comic) as a teaching media that helps teachers engage students interesting to learn grammar. The aims of this research are to find out students’ achievement in grammar before being taught by using English Webtoon, and to find out student achievement in grammar after being taught by using English Webtoon. In addition, it measured the significant differences in student achievement in grammar before and after being taught by using English Webtoon. The method used in this research is quantitative method with pre-experimental design or one–group pre–test post–test design. The sampling technique of this research uses Convenience Sampling. This research was conducted to the tenth-grade students of MA Wasilatul Huda as experimental class. To collect the data and to measure students’ grammar mastery achievement, the samples are given pre–test, treatment, and post–test. Pre-test and post-test are given to gain data which is analyzed students’ grammar mastery before and after being taught by using English Webtoon. This study finds out that grammar mastery of students would increase and be effective by using English Webtoon. Based on the data analysis, mean of the pre-test score is different from mean of the post-test score. The mean of pre-test score is 42 and the mean of post-test score is 64.74. In addition, calculating of paired t-test is tcount is 12.426 and ttable df 19 with the level significant (α) 5% is 2.093 which means tcount is higher than ttable. In brief, H0 is rejected while Ha is accepted. It means that there is a significant difference of students’ grammar mastery between before and after being taught using English Webtoon. In conclusion, teaching learning grammar by using English Webtoon can improve students’ grammar mastery at the tenth grade of MA Wasilatul Huda Cicalengka. Finally, teaching learning grammar by using English Webtoon is recommended to English teachers to entertain students and attract their motivation in learning grammar.
