Abstract

As an element that connects the four language skills in EFL, vocabulary play the most important role in foreign language learning. For communicate well in a foreign language, students must obtain adequate the number of words and must know how to use them accurately and precisely. However, there are still some students who lack of vocabulary in teir writing descriptive text at SMPN 03 Ciparay. The goal of this study was to determine the correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and their writing achievement in descriptive text at the seventh grade students of SMPN 03 Ciparay, Bandung in the academic year 2019/2020. It aims to find out whether there is a significant relationship between students' vocabulary mastery and their writing achievement in descriptive text. This research uses quantitative methods with correlative research. In this study, the population was seventh grade students of SMPN 03 Ciparay, Bandung with a population of 284 students. There are 28 students were taken for the study sample. The writer took samples using simple random sampling, and the tests to obtain data on vocabulary mastery and the writing descriptive texts, while inferential analysis is used to prove the hypothesis test at the 0.05 significance level. The results of data analysis showed that the correlation coefficient () was 0.451. This shows that there is a fair relationship between students' mastery of vocabulary and their ability to write descriptive texts. This includes an interpretation score scale between 0,400-0,600. With a significance level of 5%, the table score r table () obtained was 0.388, therefore, > (0.451 > 0.388). Based on the results of this study, it can be stated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.
