Abstract

This study generally aims 1) to compare the speaking performance of English Education Department students based on their educational background, 2) to investigate the potential factor affecting the difference of speaking performance, 3) to know the problem faced by students and the solution to develop their speaking performance. This study used a qualitative research approach, particularly a descriptive study design. The subject of this research is the first semester students of the English Education Department in UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung academic year 2019. The participants in this study were four students. The data of students’ speaking performance was obtained from the observation. Then, the questionnaire and interview were used to know students’ educational background and to investigate programs in their previous high school to reveal the reasons underlying differences in their speaking performance, and also to know the problems faced by students and the solution to develop their speaking performance. The result showed that each student from different school backgrounds has their own strength in each aspect. The participants from public senior high school were better in the aspect of vocabulary, grammar, and fluency. Meanwhile, the participants from an Islamic boarding school showed better aspects of pronunciation and comprehension. The difference may happen due to several factors. Among them, dissimilar variations of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities at both types of school and the frequency of the activities become the potential factors affecting the differences. These problems become obstacles for students to improve their speaking ability. Related to the result, respondents prefer the classroom environment such as learning with a fun method to improve their speaking. In conclusion, this research generally attempts to see whether students’ educational background influence students’ speaking performance in learning English. Hopefully, by knowing it, the lecture would apply strategies that can help students to develop their speaking performance.
