Abstract

Noun Phrase is the part of syntax and grammar. It has rules and deregulations that must be obeyed. Without the correct arrangement of noun, the meaning of the sentence can make the people confused. Hence, the research questions of this research are: 1) What are the constructions of noun phrase in political articles in The Jakarta Post? 2) What are the functions of noun phrase in political articles in The Jakarta Post? The researcher uses Essentials Grammar theory by Nelson (2002). The research method of this research is descriptive qualitative method. Technique of collecting data of this research uses five steps, which are selecting, reading, highlighting, categorizing, and writing. Meanwhile, Technique of analyzing data of this research uses three steps, which are identifying, analyzing and concluding. From the data analysis, the findings show that the constructions of noun phrase in the political news in The Jakarta Post is dominated by the construction of pre-modifier + head (58 data), the construction of head + post-modifier (10 data) and the construction of pre-modifier + head + post-modifier (6 data). Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the construction of pre-modifier + head is the construction that is used dominantly than the other two constructions which are head + post-modifier and pre-modifier + head + post-modifier. Moreover, the noun phrase can occupy the most functions of the sentence depending on the types of the sentence such as subject, direct object, indirect object, subject complement, object complement and object of preposition in adverbial.
