Abstract

Vocabulary is an important part of a language. Without vocabulary all nothing can be conveyed. It means that even someone has good grammar in speaking or writing but it will be useless if they do not know many vocabularies. There are a lot of techniques to improve vocabulary acquisition, one of them is by using digital storytelling. Digital storytelling can improve a vocabulary acquisition because digital storytelling combines art with a mixture of digital media, including text, pictures, recorded audio narration, music, and video. It can help students’ vocabulary acquisition. The pre-experimental study was conducted at 10th grade students of Mekar Arum Senior High School. The samples consist of 32 students of X Social Science - 1 as the experimental group. The experimental group was exposed digital storytelling in teaching-learning process. The data were obtained by using pretest and posttest. The pretest was given before the treatment and the posttest was calculated using analytical statistics. The result of the data shows that the average score of students’ vocabulary acquisition by using digital storytelling is 58.53 meaning low category, while the result of the post-test is 73.06 meaning high category. The result of calculating t-test is t count = 11.54 is higher than t table = 1.55. In brief, H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means there is a significant difference in students’ vocabulary acquisition by using digital storytelling. This study came to the conclusion that there was significant effect of digital storytelling on students’ vocabulary acquisition. It is very important for the teacher that digital storytelling can be used as alternative media in teaching-learning vocabulary.
