Abstract

ENGLISH: Social inequality is a phenomenon that occur in the society because of inequality in various sectors of social life. The focus of this research was the social inequality that appears in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games through the explanation from the characters. The statement of this problem were divided into three research questions, there were: 1. Analyzing the pattern of power cause the social inequality of Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games. 2. Analyzing the kinds of social inequality are found in Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games. 3. Analyzing the struggle of the characters as proletarian to fight social inequality in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. This thesis, researcher used a mimetic approach. This mimetic approach sees literature as an imitation, reflection, and representation of the universe and human life. In analyzing data, researchers used Marxist literary criticism. Marxist literary criticism also fulfills the concepts and logical principles of research. This thesis uses qualitative methods. Data was collected from reading Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games more than three times. Meanwhile, the data is also analyzed in several stages as follows: identifying, clarifying, describing, analyzing, interpreting, and concluding. The research is to find out how the social inequality are represented in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, how can the upper class control the lower class, how can poverty and income inequality can affect social inequality in the society, and how proletarian can get rid of the classes in the society with the existence of class struggle. The result of this study included: the first, there were several patterns that cause social inequality, namely the reaping system, tessera, barriers and the rules made by the Capitol which makes people suffer more. the second, there are three types of social inequality that appeared in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, namely income, poverty and human rights violations. The last, the main characters who experience social inequality in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games were Katniss Everdeen and Gale Hawthorne. With the class struggle the society will fight for its class for freedom and eliminate the class in society. INDONESIA: Ketimpangan sosial adalah fenomena yang terjadi dimasyarakat Karena adanya ketidaksetaraan di berbagai sektor kehidupan bermasyarakat. Focus penelitian ini adalah ketimpangan sosial yang muncul di dalam Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. Pernyataan permasalahan dalam penelitian ini dibagi menjadi tiga, yaitu: 1. Menganalisis pola kekuasaan yang menyebabkan ketimpangan sosial di dalam Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. 2. Menganalisis jenis-jenis ketimpangan sosial yang ada di dalam Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. 3. Menganalisis perjuangan karakter-karakter sebagai proletar dalam melawan ketimpangan sosial di dalam Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games.Di dalam skripsi ini, peneliti menggunakan pendekatan mimetik. Pendekatan mimetik ini melihat karya sastra sebagai imitasi, refleksi dan representatif dari alam semesta dan kehidupan manusia. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan kritik sastra Marxist. Kritik sastra Marxist juga memenuhi konsep dn prinsip-prinsip logis dari penelitian. Skripsi ini menggunakan metod kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan dari membaca Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games lebih dari tiga kali. Sementara itu, data juga di analisis dengan beberapa tahap sebagai berikut: mengidentifkasi, mengklarifikasi, menggambarkan, menganalisis, menginterpretasi, dan menyimpulkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana ketimpangan sosial terwakili dalam Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. Bagaimana kelas atas dapat mengotrol kelas bawah, bagaimana kemiskinan dan ketimpangan pendapatan bisa memengaruhi ketimpangan social dimasyarakat, dan bagaimana masyarakat bisa menyingkirkan kelas-kelas yang ada dimasyarakat dengan memunculkan perjuangan kelas. Hasil dari penelitian ini diantaranya: pertama, terdapat beberapa pola yang menyebabkan ketimpangan sosial dalam Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, yaitu, the reaping system, tessera, pembatas dan aturan-aturan yang dibuat oleh the Capitol yang membuat masyarakat semakin menderita. kedua, ada tiga jenis ketimpangan sosial yang Nampak di dalam Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, yaitu ketimpangan pendapatan, kemiskinan dan pelanggaran hak asasi manusia. Terakhir, tokoh-tokoh utama yang merasakan ketimpangan sosial dalam Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games diantaranya Katniss Everdeen dan Gale Hawthorne. Dengan adanya perjuangan kelas maka masyarakat akan memperjuangkan kelasnya demi kebebasan dan menghilangkan pengkelasan dimasyarakat.
