Abstract

In a conversation, the language which is uttered brings particular functions depending on the intention of the speaker. These functions include describing, expressing emotional feeling of speaker, conveying ideas, maintain the contact, and persuading or commanding someone for take action through utterances from the speaker. This research discusses problems in drama script about the language functions are used by the main character and why his utterances work as a verbal art in Drama Death of a Salesman. This research was undertaken in order to make people comprehend of the language function who used in the society when they communicate to each other in every situation. The researcher analyzes the problems based on Jacobson’s theories about six language functions and six constitutive factors in communication that must be appear which is corresponding with six language functions. There are functions which appears in every conversation such as referential function, conative function, emotive function, phatic function, poetic function, and metalingual function. Each function takes important role of gaining meaning and effect of verbal messages towards the speaker or the hearer. This research uses qualitative descriptive method to reach the research finding. The sources of 308 data collected from Willy’s Loman dialog in drama script Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller at act 1. Based on data analysis, the researcher found kind of referential function in 105 utterances, conative function in 58 utterances, emotive function in 74 utterances, phatic function 51 utterances, and poetic function in 20 utterances that uses several poetical devices who focuses on messages for own sake. INDONESIA : Didalam sebuah percakapan, Bahasa yang diucapkan mengandung fungsi khusus tergantung pada maksud dari seorang pembicara. Beberapa fungsi bahasa didalam komunikasi sosial yang membuat Bahasa tersebut lebih memiliki nilai fungsi yang berbeda-beda seperti untuk mendeskripsikan objek, mengutarakan perasaan pembicara, menguatarakan ide atau gagasan, memelihara kontak dalam suatu komunikasi, dan juga untuk membujuk atau memerintah seseorangan melalui ucapan dari seorang pembicara. Penelitian ini membahas masalah didalam skrip drama tentang fungsi Bahasa apa saja yang digunakan oleh karakter utama dan mengapa ucapan tersebut bisa dianggap sebagai verbal art di dalam drama Death of a Salesman. Penelitian tentang fungsi Bahasa ini membantu seseorang untuk memahami sebuah maksud dari tiap fungsi Bahasa ketika digunakan dalam komunikasi sosial di berbagai situasi. Peneliti menganalisis masalah berdasarkan pada teori yang dikemukakan oleh Jakobson mengenai enam fungsi Bahasa dan enam faktor penting yang muncul dalam sebuah komunikasi, enam faktor tersebut saling berhubungan satu sama lain denga enam fungsi bahasa. Beberapa fungsi Bahasa tersebut yang muncul disetiap percakapan diantaranya fungsi referensial, fungsi konatif, fungsi emotif, fungsi patik, fungsi puitis, dan juga fungsi metalingual. Setiap fungsi tersebut memiliki peran penting dalam mendapatkan sebuah arti dan efek terhadap sebuah Bahasa lisan terhadap seorang pembicara ataupun seorang pendengar. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kulitatif deskriptif untuk mencapai hasil penelitian ini. Sumber data yang diambil berjumlah 308 data dari dialog Willy Loman dalam skrip drama Death of Salesman oleh Arthur Miller pada act 1. Berdasarkan analisis data, peneliti menemukan 105 ucapan yang memiliki fungsi referensial, 58 ucapan dari fungsi konatif, 74 ucapan yang memiliki fungsi emotif, 51 ucapan yang memiliki fungsi patik, dan 20 ucapan yang memiliki fungsi puitis. 20 ucapan puitis tersebut juga dianggap sebagai ucapan yang memiliki nilai estetis dengan menggunakan beberapa poetical device hingga menjadikan ucapan tersebut menjadi sebuah verbal art yang tentunya berfokus terhadap kepentingan pesan itu sendiri.
