Abstract

This research observes Singaporean English borrowing words in Phua Chu Kang sitcoms. There are some phrases or expressions which are not well-structured according to the Standard English. Thus, this study is aimed at finding Singaporean English borrowing words and identifying it based on Standard English. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research in which the data are taken from eight serial Phua Chu Kang sitcoms. The data are collected and analyzed based on Standard English proposed by Milroy. Then, the mistakes found are classified into several corrections. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses three steps. The data that have been obtained are identified, categorized, and interpreted in order to get the results based on two research questions. The result shows that the researcher has found many borrowing words from other languages such as Chinese 4 words, Malay 14 words, Punjabi 1 word, English 2 word and Spanish 1 word in Phua Chu Kang sitcoms. The result also shows that the Standard English of Singaporean is influenced by the use of Malay. Therefore, the researcher attempted to revise the phrases based on the Standard English, consisting of correction of noun, correction of to be, correction of tense, correction of interrogative, and correction of repetition.
