Abstract

Online Cooking Videos is tutorial that can help students understand complex ideas more easily. Nowadays video is becoming more and more popular tool in teaching English and cooking programs are growing in popularity. Ainsworth (2008), it can be concluded that cooking video can be memorable to the students rather than the words. Also, it is more attractive and unique for them. As the result, the students’ may be more enthusiastic about learning speaking skill through procedural text. Educators and researchers acknowledge increased levels of student engagement have a significant positive influence on student learning and outcomes (Carini, Kuh, & Klein, 2006; Kuh et al., 2007; Glanville &Wildhagen, 2007). This research tried to know the EFL students’ speaking ability in procedural text taught before and after using online cooking videos and find out a significant difference between the EFL students’ speaking ability before and after taught by using quantitative approach. In order to complete the finding, this research also explores what attitudes are given by the students’ engagement. This research was classified as an exploratory research. It was conducted in two cycles, which was held for four meetings in the first cycle and one meeting in the second cycle. The subjects of this research were 42 students of class VIII D of SMP ISLAM PACET. The data were qualitative and quantitative. The quantitative data were obtained from tests (pre-test and post-test), while the qualitative data were obtained through giving questionnaire to the students. It can be concluded that both quantitative and qualitative research approaches are correlated each other. The result of the research also showed that the enhancement on the teaching and learning process affected the enhancement on the students’ speaking skills. The students’ speaking skills were measured quantitatively by comparing the mean score of pre-test and post-test. The result revealed that the mean score of the students’ speaking performance increased from 56,50 in the pre-test to 68,90 in the post-test. The gain score of the students’ speaking skills was 7.08. In conclusion, the use of Online Cooking Videos by the teacher bring some beneficial results such as the research showed that the implementation of Online Cooking Videos in the teaching and learning process of speaking was believed to be effective to enhance the students’ speaking skills. The students’ engagement increased. They were more enthusiastic in learning speaking. Moreover, the students were interested in various materials presented by the teacher. They could get involved actively in the speaking learning process. In addition, the practice of using Online Cooking Videos by the teacher is viewed positively by the students since it has beneficial impact for their learning progress.
