Abstract

Classroom discussion is one of the methods of learning activity which uses question to get more explanation about the material of learning and sharing information with other students. This research attempts to find out the types of question and the characteristics of male and female students’ language in delivering questions in the classroom discussion. Two classes of sixth semesters students of English Department UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung are involved as the participants. Qualitative case study is employed as the research design, and audio recording are used as the instruments to collect the data. The theory of questions’ types by Archer (2005) and theory of language and gender by Lakoff (1975) are used to analyze the data. The result of this research shows there are three types of questions; polar interrogatives, wh-interrogatives, and elliptical questions. 26 questions are found, there are: 9 polar questions; 2 questions are delivered by male and 7 questions by female, 11 wh-interrogatives; 5 questions are delivered by male and 6 questions by female, and 6 elliptical questions; 2 questions are delivered by male and 4 questions by female. There are three characteristics of male and female students’ language in delivering question in the classroom discussion, they are: Politeness form, the use of questions in declaratives statements and hypercorrect grammar. 7 questions related to politeness form of questions; 2 questions are delivered by male and 5 questions by female, 6 questions related characteristic of the use questions in the declaratives statements; 2 questions are delivered by male and 4 by female, and 11 questions related to hypercorrect grammar characteristics; 4 question is delivered by male and 7 questions are delivered by female. From these characteristics, it can be concluded that female students are more polite, more uncertain thinking, and are more hypercorrect in grammar than male students.
