Abstract

In writing, learners usually find out difficulties to make a sentence, especially in making grammatical rules implemented. One element of the grammar rules that have to be mastered by students is noun phrase. The important thing is to write noun phrase as short as possible in an English text (John, 2008). Even though the short one, it should be defined or explained clearly for a writer about their meaning. In the EFL context, some of previous studies reported that many learners experienced their difficulties in arranging structure form in noun phrase. Thus, this research examined the EFL learners to know their ability in using noun phrase complexity, especially on a descriptive text. Through this study, the researcher analyzed the EFL learners’ ability in using noun phrase complexity in their descriptive text. The research participants are students of the eighth grade, which consist of fifteen students who were chosen by an English teacher. This research used qualitative method with descriptive analysis. According to Creswell (2012), description is a detailed rendering of people, places, or events in qualitative research; it is easiest to start the analysis after the initial reading and coding of the data. The result concludes three items. Firstly, the teacher has a good language teaching characteristic as she taught the materials of descriptive text and noun phrase. This research found the relation of about the score of students’ writing ability and the teacher capacity in teaching in the classroom. Secondly, the number of learners using the most noun phrase is adjective and determiners at the pre-modifiers of a noun phrase. The total number of adjective used by students is correctly sixty-four noun phrases, while determiner is correctly sixty-one noun phrases. Twelve learners from fifteen learners can use noun phrases correctly in determiners. Finally, the teacher’s target to build EFL learners able to write noun phrase comprehension that students can make a noun phrase until the students were able to write a sentence and a paragraph using noun phrases correctly. In conclusion, EFL learners’ ability in this research has a good level generally level in using noun phrase. Even though, some of the students have different problems in writing the descriptive text especially using noun phrase. The researcher recommends to the teacher to prepare the next strategy and method in order to help EFL learners who have problems in using noun phrase in writing a descriptive text.
