Abstract

This study was motivated by the fact that some students in SMPN 1 Cileunyi IX still had difficulties in learning English vocabulary. To solve the problem, Treasure Hunt Game was selected as a technique of teaching. Treasure Hunt Game can make the students more enjoyable and interested in learning English vocabulary. It can be used as an attractive media to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. Teaching English vocabulary by using Treasure Hunt Game can make the teaching process more interesting, and enjoyable. The aims of this research are to find out the result of students’ vocabulary before implementing Treasure Hunt Game, to find out the result of students’ vocabulary after implementing Treasure Hunt Game, and the last to find out the significant difference between students’ vocabulary mastery before and after implementing Treasure Hunt Game. In this study, the researcher used pre-experimental study. The sample for this research is 30 students to obtain the data, researcher searched the score from pretest and posttest result. To analyze the collected data, the researcher used mean, standard deviation, t-test and hypothesis testing. The instrument to gather the data was an achievement test. The researcher can be seen from the mean of the experimental class. The mean of pretest before given the treatment is 40.5 and after being given treatment is 80.8. Based on the findings above, it is known that the result is better than after being given the treatment. Therefore, from the calculation in testing t, it is known that t0 18.75 while ttable is 2.03. It means that t0 is higher than ttable . Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected (H1 ) is accepted. This means that the students’ vocabulary mastery is significant. From the explanation above, it can be concluded that the implementation of teaching English vocabulary by using Treasure Hunt Game at ninth grade SMPN 1 Cileunyi improves students’ vocabulary mastery. The researcher recommends this method can be useful for studnts in learning English to improve their vocabulary mastery. For English teacher can implement this method in teaching vocabulary.
