Abstract

Writing is very important for accounting students nowadays. In a recent national survey of accounting professionals to determine the relative importance of 32 business communication skills needed by newly-hired accounting graduates, seven of the top-ten skills were related to writing. The research was aimed to investigate how quality of accounting students in writing descriptive and announcement text to know their strengths and weaknesses in writing and compare each other. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants involved were 9 of 10th Grade Students of Bakti Nusantara 666 Vocational School Majoring in Accounting. The purposive sampling was used to choose the participants by taking the good, average and low score of English mid-test. The data were collected through document to find out the result of the students’ writing skill. The documents were taken from the test that the researcher collected at 10th grade of accounting students. The documents are obtained from accounting students after they had got the explanation about writing descriptive text and announcement text. The analysis of students’ writing skills is meant to see the quality of their writing skills in descriptive and announcement text using writing rubric (Cohen, 1994) and compare each other. The results show that, in the term of writing skills, the students had better skills in writing announcement text than descriptive text. Most of students got excellent criterion of writing descriptive text in content and organization but most of student had poor to very poor in vocabulary, grammar and mechanic. In addition in the term of generic structure, the students also forgot to create concluding paragraph in the end of their descriptive text. In announcement text, most of the students already can make announcement in excellent criterion in all aspect of writing such as content, organization, vocabulary, grammar and mechanic. The student also already can make announcement text based on generic structure. Based on those findings, the researcher has suggestions for the teachers to organize their classroom to ensure the students understand every part of topic, for the students have to be brave whenever they found difficulties, asks the teacher to help them solving the problem. Lastly, for the future researchers to conduct the same research with different setting and subject.
