Abstract

Teaching and learning English in Junior High School emerge number of problem especially in grammar. Although, grammar is an essential to be mastered to learn language that influences the four language aspects. The problem found in eighth students of MTs. Miftahulfalah, they argue that grammar has confusing. rules so it is difficult to be learned. Therefore, in this research, the researcher chose the animated cartoons as media to solve the students’ problem in learning one of grammar rules, namely degree of comparison. The purposes of this research are to find out (1) the students’ ability in degree of comparison with using animated cartoons, (2) the students’ ability in degree of comparison with using board races game, and (3) the significant difference between students’ ability in degree of comparison with animated cartoons and with using board races game. The method used in this research was a quantitative method with the quasi- experimental design. The population was 442 students of the eighth grade at MTs. Miftahulfalah Kota Bandung in academic year 2016/2017. Two classes were taken as a sample; class VIII-D as the sample of an experimental class consisting of 29 students and class VIII-C as the control class consisting of 28 students. The instruments used in this research were degrees of comparison pre-test and post- test in the form of multiple-choice test, and they were processed by statistical analysis. The statistical analysis confirms that the animated cartoons can improve students’ ability in degrees of comparison. This is supported by the post-test mean in the experimental class (82,44) is higher than the control class (68,71). Then, the result of t-test shows the calculated value of tcount is 6.652 and ttable with significance level 5% was 2.004. It indicates that tcount is greater than ttable (6.652>2.004=tcount>ttable). It proves that research hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means that there is the significance difference between students’ ability in the degree of comparison with using animated cartoons and board races game. The further result shows that the N-gain calculation in experimental class (0.42 or “average”) is greater than the control class (0.28 or “low”). In conclusion, it is clear that the improvement of students’ ability in degrees of comparison by using animated cartoons is more significant than the improvement of the students’ ability who learn by board races game. Based on the results in this research, the animated cartoons can be innovative media for English grammar. The suggestions are that animated cartoons used as an alternative media for English teaching with any kinds of topic and can improve students understanding in learning degrees of comparison. Animated cartoons enables students to look for a particular topic of grammar as learning references. The last as a reference for those who are interested in conducting similar study and doing a better research.
