Abstract

This research aims to discuss about characteristics of Christoper Johnson McCandless as the main character in Into The Wild Film and the fulfillment of his needs in achieving self-actualization needs that described in his journey into the wild in Alaska. Clearly, this research focuses on two things, which are: (1) what are the characteristics of Christoper Johnson McCandless as the main character in the film, and (2) what are the fulfillment of needs of Christoper Johnson McCandless as the main character in achieving self-actualization in the film. It also concern those two things with film theories, characterization theories, Maslow’s characteristic of self-actualization theory and Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs theory. This research uses the narrative method or description qualitative as description to shows characteristics of the main character identified according to Bogs and Petrie and Robert Diyanni characterization theory which produces self-actualization in the film. It also shows the main character through the actions, appearances and speechs of the character. Specifically, this research uses dialogue, cinematic composition, and internal action to illustrate the main character in the film. This research also uses the movie script to depicts the character and its dialogues, setting, and the detail explanation of certain point, such as the details of the setting and the character’s movement. The result shows that the main character described as a person who has the characteristics of self-actualization, as a person who can fulfill his needs to achieve self-actualization needs and find the meaningful life in peak experience, and as a person who gets the wisdom that changes his originally thought about the happiness and human relationship.
