Abstract

Comprehending a text is not easy because they must think critically and needs a reading skill and the most important thing is the motivation in learning. It was found that the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Rengasdengklok still have difficulty in understanding the text. Therefore, the teacher as the facilitator has the important role in teaching this skill and helps them to solve this problem so that they can understand the English text better. There are several teaching strategies in English especially in reading comprehension and one of them is Gallery Walk Strategy. Gallery walk is a strategy that can be used in exploring students’ task especially in reading. The purpose of this research are to find out 1) the students’ reading comprehension by Gallery Walk Strategy; 2) the students’ reading comprehension by lecturing method; 3) significance difference between students’ reading comprehension with Gallery Walk Strategy and lecturing method. The method used in this research was quantitative method with quasi- experimental design. The population was 83 students of the eighth grade at SMPN 1 Rengasdengklok in academic year 2015/2016. Two classes was taken as sample; class VIII-A as the sample of experimental class that consists of 41 students and class VIII-C as the control class that consists of 42 students. The instruments used in this research were reading comprehension pretest and posttest in form of multiple- choice test and they were processed by statistical analysis. Furthermore, based on data analysis, the results shows the significant difference between using Gallery Walk Strategy on students’ reading comprehension skill and using only conventional method. The result of pretest in experimental class’ mean is 66.05 while control class’ mean is 63.17. Besides, the result of posttest is 89.04 for experimental class’ mean while 68.67 for control class. Thus, the improvement happens better in experimental class than in the control class. The hypotheses testing result by using t-test shows the data expresses the tcount is 14.15 whereas the ttable is 1.99 in the posttest data. However, in the pretest, tcount is 1.79 while the ttable is 1.99. In conclusion, there is a significant difference between using gallery walk strategy on students’ reading comprehension and using lecturing method (conventional). Gallery Walk Strategy influences the students’ reading comprehension. In short, Gallery Walk Strategy can be used as a strategy in teaching reading comprehension at eighth grade junior high school.
