Abstract

Reading comprehension is considered significant skills for students, but it is not easy to make reading as the ability of Indonesian students’ life. Furthermore, Indonesian government established a solution that is School Literacy Movement (SLM), which Readathon is a way to make reading as ability and to explore students’ literal comprehension in reading English texts. This study is aimed: (1) to observe how the process of SLM through Readathon is implemented, (2) to find out the students’ literal achievements, (3) to reveal the students’ responses to SLM through Readathon. This research used a case study qualitative approach by elaborating the process of SLM through Readathon in exploring students’ literal comprehension. It was conducted in the second semester of the academic year 2018-2019. The participants of this research were twenty-five students of seventh grade, which the sample was selected by the purposeful sampling of SMP Laboratorium Percontohan UPI Kampus Cibiru-Bandung. The data was obtained from observation, test, interview, and questionnaire. The data analysis was presented by describing the result of observation and students’ responses toward Readathon, as besides, there was a little numerical data from the test result which was obtained by the classroom average score percentage. The result of this research shows that the implementation process of SLM through Readathon reveals successful indicators. During a month, students read an English book; and four meeting review observations which have been implemented by the teacher and the students in accordance with Stanley and Thornbury’s Readathon procedure guide (2013). Furthermore, the average score of literal comprehension skill, which was acceptable: 92% of students achieve the passing grade, and 8% of students got the standard score. Finally, the students’ responses were the domination of positive responses toward Readathon, which the students said Readathon could enhance their reading habit. In conclusion, this research shows that the SLM through Readathon was useful for students’ reading habit and students’ literal comprehension skills. This study is recommended for those who want to build an acceptable reading habit and to increase the reading ability in Indonesia using the SLM program through Readathon activity in the schools.
