Abstract

Commonly, the students who read newspaper find it difficult to understand the English terms that are usually used in every newspaper, especially in the “Media Indonesia” newspaper. Intertextuality is always presented in any piece of writing, because intertextuality means a conscious communication between one text and one context. Therefore, this research analyzes the reader understanding on the technique of intertextuality analysis, and the meaning of the English terms. This paper presents analysis of intertextuality of the English terms in “Media Indonesia” newspaper. According to background above, the writer focuses on the questions:1) What are the categories of English terms and the techniques of intertextual representation in “Media Indonesia” newspaper?; 2) How do the eighth semester students of English Department understand the intertextuality of the English terms in “Media Indonesia” newspaper? To answer those questions, the writer uses the qualitative descriptive method to describe and explain the understanding of the eighth semester students of English Department of State Islamic University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The data source is from the English terms in “Media Indonesia” newspaper, while the data are collected from the documentation study and the questionnaire to the 8th semester students of English Department. The data are about the understanding of English terms. Then the steps of analyzing data are from the several points those are collecting the data from the newspaper, organizing, categorizing and describing the data from the questionnaire. The result of analysis shows that the techniques of intertextuality found in “Media Indonesia” newspaper are direct quotation, indirect quotation, mentioning of a person, document or statements, then, comment or evaluation on a statement, text, or otherwise invoked voice, using recognizable phrasing, terminology associated with specific people or groups of people or particular documents, using language and forms that seem to echo certain ways of communicating, discussions among other people, and types of documents. Besides, the students have different understanding to the English terms and the technique of intertextuality. More than a half of students understand with the technique of intertextuality in that paragraph but the other students feel difficult to differentiate about one technique with the others. There are the paragraphs making them confuse to classify, this matter is influenced by the reading habit. Regarding from the result analysis, the writer concluded that there are some students who did not understand the English terms and the technique of intertextual representation. Because, sometimes, the techniques of intertextual are difficult to identify, so it needs to read about the texts it deeply. Reading habit needs by the eighth semester students of English Department to increase the ability of understanding the meaning of English terms and the technique of intertextuality. So they can explain the English terms clearly.
