Abstract

ENGLISH: Transitivity is a system which realizes the ideational meanings. This research has two objectives. First, it is aimed at finding out the types of process and participant derived from the transitivity analysis in the text. Second it is aimed at finding out the newspaper bias reflected on the transitivity analysis in the text. The researcher chooses this research because the object of this research politically provides some opinions about Donald Trump. The object of this research is an editorial entitled “The ‘Nuclear Button’ Explained: For Starters, There’s No Button” from The New York Times newspaper. It is downloaded from the newspaper’s website. The method of this research is qualitative. The data are collected by reading the text and segmenting them into clauses. The researcher then conducts transitivity analysis to find out the types of process and participant in the text. Next, the researcher investigates the pattern of transitivity that constructs political bias. From the result of the analysis, it can be concluded that the highest sum of process is material process. In an editorial of The New York Times, Donald Trump is portrayed as a troublemaker and attributed negatively. This shows ideologically that The New York Times with its liberal ideology wants its readers to be against all of Trump’s policies (anti-Trump). Objek penelitian ini yaitu sebuah tajuk rencana yang berjudul “The ‘Nuclear Button’ Explained: For Starters, There’s No Button” dari surat kabar The New York Times.
