Abstract

Suggestopedia is one of “humanistic approach” teaching methods that mobilize students learning in comfort environment to reveal students’ potentials they cannot realize based on motivating affective domain behaviours of learner by appealing to emotions. The method used is a combination techniques such as physical relaxation, visualization excercises, relaxing music, based on suggestive principles, students’ self esteem, and memory capabilities that enabling students learn with litlle conscious effort and considerable enjoyment. Specifically, the aims of this research are (1) to know the process of teaching speaking by using suggestopedia method in the classroom and (2) to find out students’ responses to the suggestopedia method in the classroom in improving students’ speaking skills. This research used qualitative approach with case study method. The participants of this research were the 12th grade students of SMK Bakti Nusantara 666 Cileunyi. The research took sample from class 12 AKT-1 (accounting) with 33 students, and 1 English teacher as a participant. The researcher took the class because the class are consisted of a lot talkative people who good in speaking English, and its based on teacher’s reccomendation at the institution. And the teacher who chose by the ressearcher is one of favorite teacher which is known for her teaching that varied and not monotonous. The data were obtained from Observation (video-recording), interview, and questionnaire. The results of the study reveal the process of the implementation of suggestopedia methods and the students’ responses. Regarding the process, there are two important findings. First, the presentation stage of suggestopedia, to make students feels that learning English is fun and not stressing. The teacher set up students’ seat into semicircle to make the students more comfortable and can see the blackboard clearly, and built up students’ spirit by giving motivation words. In concert session teacher made students familiar with the learning material that will be studied by them, the teacher explained the material briefly. Then, in second concert the teacher asked students to feel relax, close their book, and listen interested music and doing funny movements, to energizer students spirit before presentation begin. Then the last is practice part. The teacher asked students to present the material in the front of class thorugh active presentation. The second, the study explores the students’ responses toward the use of suggestopedia in teaching learning process at the classroom. In addition, the results of the study shows that the students give positive responses to the English activities especially the lesson taught by their teachers in teaching learning process using suggestopedia method. The result shows that the students are highly motivated and they feel they get enough practice as well as theory. In other word, due to the analysis of the experiment, so is the fact that suggestopedia is benefit for teaching learning. From those result, it can be concluded that many acitivities of suggestopedia method in teaching learning process were done to make the students feel fun and interested in the teaching learning process.
