Abstract

The students of English Department as bilingual people inclined to switch their Bahasa Indonesia into English on a conversation. As the technology getting higher, they use the sophisticated of technology to communicate other. Most of them are using facebook as media of communication. The phenomenon of code switching has become an interesting topic to be discussed, especially code switching found on facebook comments. Therefore, the researcher was interested in doing the research. According to the background above, this research is focusing on the questions: (1) what are the types of code switching written by the 8th semester students of English Department; (2) what are the possible reasons of the 8th semester students of English Department switch their Bahasa Indonesia into English. To answer those questions, the researcher uses qualitative method to describe and explain the phenomena of code switching found on facebook comments. The source of the data in this research is the social networking facebook and respondents. The data are collected trough documentation study and also questionnaire to the 8th semester students of English Department who joined on Spartan Lovers Association group on facebook. The researcher uses a qualitative method with quantitative procedure of collecting data. This qualitative research, therefore, is doing a descriptive method to answer the research problem. Then, the steps to analyze the data are consisting of several points, those are arranging the data, organizing, categorizing, and describing. On describing the analysis of data, the researcher uses the tabulation technique. The researcher found 80 data of code switching written by the 8th semester students of English Department. From the data collected, the researcher found code switching based on grammatical classification, and the code switching based on contextual classification. Based on grammatical classification, the researcher found tag code switching, intra-sentential code switching, and inter-sentential code switching. While based on contextual classification, there are situational code switching and metaphorical code switching. There are ten reasons of bilingual switch their Bahasa Indonesia into English. They are for exclude or include someone from conversation, qualify message, fill a linguistic need for lexical item, continue the last language used, quote someone, specify addressee, change role of a speaker, mark and emphasize group identity, specify speaker involvement, and convey confidentiality, anger, annoyance. Regarding to the result of this research, it found that the code switching based on grammatical classification is more than the code switching based on contextual classification. While for the reasons, the highest rank among the reasons is to include or exclude someone from conversation, while the lowest one is to convey confidentiality, anger, annoyance. It is hope that using of code switching can increase the ability of the Students of English Department to use English as their foreign language.
