Abstract

ENGLISH This study paper mainly explores the meaning and the role of emoticon in communication and wants to uncover meaning contained in emoticons of blackberry messenger. This research paper discusses two major concerns; first is the meaning of emoticon in blackberry messenger and the second is the way emoticon works in communication. The researcher uses writing theories from Pierce (1982) and Enkman (1965). There are triangle meaning model that consist of three major elements they are Sign, Object and Interpretant. Emoticon classified into six function nonverbal such as Repetition, Contradiction, Substitution, Regulation, Accentuation, and Complementation. A qualitative approach (Kothari, 2004 :5) was applied in this study. This method allowed the researcher to make a systematic and factual description of the obtained data. The data were taken from the researcher blackberry contact. The researcher used document analysis techniques for collecting data. From the analysis the researcher concludes that the result of the research shows in general, the meaning contained in emoticons blackberry are (1) happiness, (2) sad, (3) sick, (4) angry, (5) love, (6) relax, (7) sorrow and (8) tired with the sum each meaning as follow: 21 happiness, 6 sad, 2 sick, 5 angry, 4 love, 3 relax, 1 sorrow and 3 tired Classified by function instead of verbal communication as (1) repetition, (2) contradiction, (3) substitution and (4) complementation. With the total of each meaning as follow : 3 repetition, 6 contradiction, 8 substitution and 26 complementation. INDONESIA Penelitian ini membahas mengenai makna dan peran emoticon dalam komunikasi. Penulis menggunakan teori menulis yang berasal dari pierce (1982) dan enkman and friesen (1965). Terdapat model segitiga makna yang terdiri dari sign, object dan interpretant, berdasarkan fungsi diklasifikasikan kedalam enam fungsi seperti pengulangan, berlawanan, pengganti, pengaturan, penekanan, dan pelengkap. Pendekatan kualitatif oleh (Kothari, 2004 :5) merupakan pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian. Metode ini memperbolehkan peneliti untuk membuat deskripsi secara sistematis dan berdasarkan fakta sesungguhnya pada data yang diperoleh. Data diperoleh dari blackberry kontak peneliti. Peneliti menggunakan teknik pengumpulan data seperti document analisis. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa umumnya makna yang terkandung dalam emoticon blackberry adalah (1) perasaan senang, (2) sedih, (3) sakit, (4) marah, (5) cinta, (6) santai (7) berduka dan (8) perasaan lelah dengan jumlah masing masing makna sebagi berikut : 21 perasaan senang, 6 sedih, 2 sakit, 5 marah, 4 cinta, 3 santai, 1 berduka dan 3 perasaan lelah Berdasarkan fungsi sebagai pengganti komunikasi verbal seperti (1) pengulangan, (2) berlawanan, (3) pengganti dan (4) pelengkap dengan jumlah masing masing 3 pengulangan, 6 berlawanan, 8 pengganti dan 26 pelengkap.
