Abstract

This paper presents the research about command speech acts in Nawal El-Shadawi’s novel Woman at Point Zero. The main reason of the research is to investigate the utterances are important elements in this research because each character expresses different meaning. This research focuses on two main problems: (1) In what context are command speech acts uttered in the Woman at Point Zero’s novel? (2) What are the effects of these command speech acts on the hearer in the Woman at Point Zero’s novel? The theory used to analyze the data are speech acts from Yule (1996) and Austin (1962), command theory are from Kauffman (2012), and effect theory are from Leech (1993). This research uses qualitative approach by Kothari (2004) for analyzing the data taken from the novel, namely identifying, classifying the data that support the research questions, interpreting the data particularly of speech act based on pragmatics theory. The researcher has found a lot of commanding in Woman at Point Zero’s Novel. The totals of commanding speech acts are 17. Overall, the result of this analysis is related to the relation of the utterance with the meaning that wants to convey through that utterance.
