Abstract

In the society, there are many kinds of language style that they used especially the used of formality style. This research goal is aimed to know the kind of formality styles are used by all characters in Siren’s Lament webcomics, the kind of factors are influencing the use of formality style choices and the factors are most dominant influencing the use of formality style choices in Siren’s Lament webcomics. In this research, the researcher used Martin Joos’s theory in the explaining kinds of formality style. Afterwards, the researcher used Holmes’s theory to explain about kinds of factor that influence the use of formality style choices. To analysis the data, the researcher used qualitative content analysis method. This research applied content analysis method to explain the type of formality style and influencing formality style choices factors. The data used in this research are taken from Siren’s Lament webcomics. In Siren’s Lament webcomics, the researcher found 65 data with 103 dialogues which indicated the kind of formality styles in Siren’s Lament webcomics: 20 data with 28 dialogues which is classified as formal style, 2 data with 2 dialogues which is classified as consultative style, 42 data with 59 dialogues which is classified as casual style, and 12 data with 15 dialogues which is classified as intimate style in the conversation between the characters of Siren’s Lament webcomics. Afterwards, based on influencing formality style choices factors analysis, the researcher found 79 dialogues which is influenced by participants factor, 24 dialogues which is influenced by setting factor, 7 dialogues which is influenced by topic discussed factor, and 16 dialogues which is influenced by function factor. As the result, there are only four kinds of formality style and four kinds of factor that influence the use of formality style choices in Siren’s Lament webcomics. Casual style is frequently used and there is no frozen style that is used by all characters in Siren’s Lament webcomics. The most dominant factor which influences the use of formality style choices is participant factor.
