Abstract

Teaching learning English in Elementary School is not difficult as people ever think at this time. The result of English teaching and learning process is influenced by several factors, such as teachers’ competence, method and technique of teaching, using of media and others. Cooperative learning is one of teaching method that is assumed to influence students’ achievement in English vocabulary. Cooperative learning can make the teaching and learning process effective because it give opportunities to student to cooperate with one to another for positive purposes. Number Head Together (NHT) technique is one kind of cooperative learning method. This technique can be used as a new technique in explaining materials. This research is conducted at the sixth grade of SDN II Mekarwangi Ciamis. The research is aimed to identify students’ achievement English vocabulary taught with Number Head Together (NHT) technique, to identify students’ achievement English vocabulary taught with conventional technique in language teaching learning process, and to identify the difference between the students’ achievement English vocabulary taught with NHT technique and a conventional technique. The research is used by using an experimental method. The experiment is divided into two groups; they are experimental group (teaching by using NHT technique) and control group (teaching using conventional technique). To get the data’s, the writer used pre test and post test. The data analysis is used to calculate the significant influence between teaching by using Number Head Together and with using conventional technique on students’ vocabulary achievement. The counting is used the statistical method with t test. The result data analysis shows us that the students’ vocabulary achievement using Number Head Together technique has the average score: 70.28, while the average score of the students’ vocabulary achievement with conventional technique is 64.5. The counting of ttest data had data tcount = 2.70 < t table = 5.83. So it can be said that null hypothesis is rejected. It means that there is a significant difference between teaching by using Number Head Together technique and teaching with conventional technique. In other words, teaching English vocabulary using cooperative learning through the application of Number Head Together technique is more effective than that conventional technique.
