Abstract

English is a tool for global communication and students should master English to understand and strengthen their local and national culture as well as to know and understand international culture. The importance of English affects the way English are taught. That is why it is important to increase the quality of English teaching. To improve English teaching, we have to improve the five components of language instruction. However, this study will only focus on the quality of textbook as one of the materials. Textbooks hold an important role in teaching and learning activities. It is supporting media of curriculum. Considering the importance of textbooks, teachers as well as students should have easy access to get textbooks. Indonesian government, through the Department of National Education, provides the electronic school books (Buku Sekolah Elektronik) or e-books for elementary, junior high and senior high school. Although the government claimed that the e-book has already passed the National Education Standard, the result of the evaluation is not published. Hereby, the writer, as a future teacher, wants to analyze whether the government’s e-book is compatible with the KTSP and the characteristics of students. The research is intended to analyze English e-book for junior high school grade VII, “English in Focus�, based on the KTSP and the characteristics of students at grade seven. The research is also expected to find out the characteristics of a good English textbook. The research uses content analysis method. The kinds of data are qualitative data. The sources of data are “English in focus� textbook and other books or library references to get some theories that supports this research. After analyzing the content of textbook, the writer found that: 1) “English in Focus� accommodated the basic competences of the KTSP. Learning activities and indicators of the textbook are compatible to the Syllabus of KTSP from the Diknas. It means that “English in Focus� is compatible with the KTSP. 2) The materials of English in Focus is compatible with the characteristics of students at grade seven. It can be looked at the materials that contain materials for Junior High School at grade seven. The content, vocabulary, and grammar are compatible with their characteristics which are in age of transition between childhood and adulthood.
